First off, here is the link for the information on the applications:
Since getting my vExpert status in 2014 I have had so many opportunities and benefits, I can scarcely count them all. So I will try to list them out (polling from some other resources and blogs that outline it).
First and foremost, is the awesome community I have discovered of people passionate about what they do and not afraid to share it. Personally, I have used the NFR software licenses for labs and beta access to technologies not yet even publicly announced.
I have been the a technical editor for an awesome VMware press book coming out called “The Art of IT Infrastructure Design”, which is a game changing book for architects.
From the community, I became aware of the VirtualDesignMaster competition (virtualdesignmaster.com) and was a participant coming in second place. From that I also made many friends forged in fire from around the world.
Then meeting all these brilliant people at VMworld really set the stage for the next stage in my professional career. I now have a peer group of some of the smartest people in the industry.
I have become a PernixPro (http://www.pernixdata.com/partners/pernixpro) and had the opportunity to contribute to the vSphere Pocket Design Guide (http://www.pernixdata.com/sites/default/files/resources/Blog_Pocketbook_ebook.pdf). Even though my article was not selected, the process helped me up my blogging game.
I have also had the opportunity to become a Nutanix Technical Champion (NTC) (http://www.nutanix.com/blog/2014/10/14/ntc)
Here is a blog about the process and paths:
Below are some other benefits:

Unofficially, there are, sometimes, also the access to VMware beta programs and/or products license. Note that VMworld pass are not listed… so it could be, but also not (usually each year it was, but please don’t ask for it, just follow the official vExpert community for any news)!
Added on May 23: For VMworld blogger passes (so not only limited to vExpert) see this link.
But there are also a lot of other benefits (this was the 2013 related list) offer by third part people or companies.
